New @ The Olive Tree Market

We had a beautiful winter day today at The Olive Tree Market!! We were lucky enough to have African Drumming group Earthen Rhythms and the percussion beats of Samba frog playing throughout the day! We also had Torin King on Harp and Tim on Possible on guitar. We are always open to musicians visiting The Olive Tree Market so if you would like to play next market  just drop us an email! ABC 1233 Radio also visited us today with Mark & Jane from The Do Riders to finish off ABC’s Saturday Morning Radio Program.

The Olive Tree Market had lots of beautiful winter goods available today! Hand Spun Winter Wraps from Val Watt, funky winter skirts from Miss Fancypants who uses vintage Japanese Kimono Fabrics combined with lovely wollen fabric and quirky winter tea pot covers in the animal shapes by Barbara Seargant. Which this space to hear what’s happening at our next market on July 2nd!

Hey all, come along on Saturday May 7th to Olive Tree and buy your mum something unique for mothers day! Don’t panic and buy something unoriginal because there a lots of lovely things to choose from this week!! We have some great new stallholders including Indigenous Artists Gambirra from Mamajee Studio and local painter Julie Baigent who has just had a sell out show with her quirky paintings of well known Newcastle icons. Also, for the first time we will be having the ‘Olive Tree Makers Bag Giveaway’. Spend $20 at any art & design stall and go into the draw to win a bag full of products from our fantastic stallholders. There will be lots happening on the day with local musicians playing some great sounds as well as delicious food. African Drumming Group Earthen Rhythms will play at 11am. We will also have a new food stall selling Paella so drop in for brunch!

There will will lots happening this Saturday at The Olive Tree Market!! Music this Saturday will include Do Re Mi Children’s Choir, Perry Fuller on Didge, Torin King on Celtic Harp and Jack Dawson on Slide Guitar. The focus this month is Wearable Art and there are lots of funky things to choose from! Di Bower has some ironic brooches of little ‘Fifties Housewives’, Zoe from Oscar and Matilda has beautiful resin artworks and Ciao Meow makes brooches from bottle tops! Of course there is lots more to see but you’ll have to come along!! We look forward to seeing you under the olive tree!

Sometimes markets get a little quiet at the beginning of the year but you’re missing out if you stay at home on the first Saturday of the month! We have some lovely new stallholders at Olive Tree with funky new products. One is ‘Blossom and Cat’ who sell vintage inspired sewing kits, to make cute little owls, or you can buy one that is already made if you are a little like me and have no relationship with needles and thread!! There will be more first time stallholders at our next market on April 2nd so come and take a peek and enjoy a day at our beautiful market…

Unbelievably, we’re heading into the festive period already.

The Olive Tree Market is holding 2 Christmas twilight markets this year.  Last year, many of our customer’s asked about having an extra market closer to Christmas, so the market dates and times for December 2010 are:

Saturday 4th December  –  4 pm until 9 pm; and

Saturday 18th December – 4 pm until 9 pm.

The market is the perfect place to purchase unique, individual gifts and also pick up some extra’s for the silly season including your puddings from “Pudding Lane” or some lovely jams and chutneys from “Aunty Eva’s Jams” plus much more…

‘Red Lantern Night Market’ will once again fill the ‘Hunter Street Mall’ and surrounding laneways with a bustling, music filled art & design market this Nov 20th, 27th and Dec 11th. Think night markets in Darwin and Asia, with the flavor of Carnivale, where visitors can enjoy the sites, sounds and smells of nighttime in the city.

‘Red Lantern Night Market’ will be even bigger than last years market. In addition to fantastic market stalls, there will be an exciting program of events, including: music, street performance, cultural acts and a larger variety of exotic food-stalls on offer.’

The initial market on the 20th of November will feature rickshaw rides, a body-painting exhibition, street performance, Earthen Rhythms African Drumming, ‘Efendi Jaenudin’ Indonesian Music Ensemble and a fire-twirling exhibition.

Additionally, ‘Livesites’ will collaborate with ‘Red Lantern Night Market and produce an evening of ‘Dancing in the Streets’, at the David Jones end of the mall’, to coincide with the initial market.

The markets on Nov 27th and Dec 11th will build on the first market and produce a program of events that will include: Rickshaw Rides, ‘Gamelan Novo Kasatria’ Orchestra & Shadow Puppet Performance, local Indie-band ‘birdsandbelles’, Central Coast duo ‘Nick & Liesl’, drumming & percussion group ‘Earthen Rhythms’ as well as fire twirling and street performance acts.

As part of it’s sponsorship “Newcastle City Council” will open the ‘King St Car Park’ on each of the market evenings and offering FREE PARKING. Visitors can walk from the car-park through to the mall undercover. This means if the it rains on market day patrons can visit the event totally undercover.
