Introducing Olive & Co in The Emporium

It’s been a big month at Olive Tree central! Last week was the opening of a new initiative by The Olive Tree Market- a small-dedicated retail space Olive & Co. Renew Newcastle offered Olive Tree a space in The Emporium, the old David Jones Building in the centre of Newcastle, and I decided to take up the challenge!

Olive & Co will showcase a curated collection of work by artist & designers, who have stalls at The Olive Tree Market, as well as other local creatives’. The space will evolve and change over time with different stallholders work featuring throughout the year. The concept was inspired by the number of people, who have told us over the last five years, that they would like to be able to view and purchase our artisans work between markets.

Its been a very hectic few weeks as Renew Newcastle allows a two weeks period between handing over the keys and requiring retailers to begin trading! The doors opened last Thursday which wouldn’t have occurred without the help of a small team of fantastic Olive Tree helpers! In particular Miss Di Jones of Sketch & Jones, artist Sally Boyle and Wyan McAllister of Honeybeegoods!

It’s a great experimental space to test the waters and see how the community responds to the concept. The Emporium also houses six other creative projects so come and check it out! Olive & Co will be opened Thursday 10-6pm, Friday 10-5pm & Saturday 10-4pm at 185 The Hunter St Mall.

The Olive Tree Market is on this Saturday June 1st! The month comes around so quickly! Hopefully we will have a beautiful day for our regular visitors and for a tour group who is bringing three busloads of market goers from Sydney to visit to Olive Tree for the first time. It’s an exciting development and the group is coming to Newcastle specifically for Olive Tree. Newcastle has such a large community of artists and we really need to start selling this group of our community to the tourist market.

New stallholders at Saturdays market will include: funky bags made from recycled billboards from Outside the Five, vibrant jewellery by Bon Bon Empire, home wares by House of Glassborow, beautifully made French style children’s decorations by Maison D’Isabelle as well as over 100 additional talented artists and designers.

Take home gourmet foods from our growing artisan gourmet produce section including: honey from Dingo Honey, French pastries from Ma Belle, coffee from Silver Skin Coffee Roasters, wine from Mill Creek Vineyard and many more!

Enjoy brunch while listening to talented local musicians and take home unique work from our dedicated handmade community.

See you under the Olive Tree!

The Olive Tree market will hold a special Mothers Day Market on May 4th- the perfect opportunity to find beautifully unique one of gifts created by the talented community of Olive Tree makers. The May 4th market will be a celebration of Motherhood with lots of beautiful work to be found for Mothers Day gifts.

Not only is our community predominately made up of women but the majority of our makers are mothers themselves. It always amazes me that these woman are not only artists and designers but frequently juggle other employment to help support their families all while being mothers. It is inspiring that they are able to constantly create and make new work and often have their children at Olive Tree on Market day. Many of these women have stalls throughout their pregnancies and are back at Olive Tree with brand new babies. It’s also really lovely to see many of our stallholders’ support each other as women and makers and many collaborative partnerships have come out of these connections.

Stalls featuring unique gifts for Mothers Day include:

Kyoko Peacock, originally of Japan, has been a regular stallholder since 2010 and makes elegant women’s clothing including stylish tops and waistcoats in Japanese fabrics. Her latest range, available at The Olive Tree Market Mother’s Day Market, includes a gorgeous waistcoat in cherry blossom fabric and red silk lining, Funky skirts by Becky Carver of The Heron & The Fox complete with hand screen printed panels, contemporary ceramics by Sandra Lee Brown of Paisleys on Harrison, one of textile art brooches by Christine Rutherford of Monkey & Bee, delicate contemporary lace collars by Nuria Mestes of Chompa, wearable ‘steampunk’ art necklaces by Arthouse Industries, home wares featuring upcycled textiles by Laini Byrne of Handmaiden Vintage, skin care using natural products and essential oils by Lhami.

There will also be delicious handmade gourmet food products for mothers who appreciate locally made artisan food products. Including organic wine from Mill Creek Vineyard, handmade chocolates from Cocao Nib, delicious Chai from Bon Chai, wonderfully flavoured olives from Arolyn Grove and dukkas and oils from A Taste of the Bush.

Take in the atmosphere of a Newcastle’s Dedicated Contemporary Art & Design Market and chat with makers who love what they do! Enjoy brunch with family and friends and listen to the cool sounds of talented local musicians.
